New gel treatment shows promise for skin cancer

(Victoria Forster/ Forbes) — An innovative gel treatment has shown early promise for treating the most common type of skin cancer. The new results from a clinical trial were published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research and investigated the topical gel which contained the drug remetinostat.

Basal cell carcinoma has a very good survival chance if caught early and is typically treated by surgery, but this can come with several acute and chronic health implications, so the researchers were hoping to find a new treatment strategy which avoided many of these side effects.

“While surgery is very effective for removing basal cell tumor, it can cause scarring and has a risk of causing bleeding or infection,” said Kavita Sarin, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Dermatology at Stanford University in California and senior author of the study. (…)
