(Canadian Press) — The abortion pill will finally be available in Quebec, and paid for by the province’s health insurance plan, as of Dec. 15.
Health Minister Gaétan Barrette made the announcement on Wednesday at a news conference in the National Assembly.
Following discussions with the Collège des médecins as well as the Ordre des pharmaciens, the minister indicated the abortion pill Mifegymiso will only be offered during the first nine weeks of pregnancy (63 days). A best practice guide for health professionals was also published on Wednesday.
A woman will first have to see a doctor, and then have an ultrasound to ascertain the progress of her pregnancy as well as the position of the fetus, that is to say inside or outside the uterus. Taking the drug is prohibited in case of ectopic pregnancy (outside the uterus).
She can then self-administer the necessary dose at home. (…)
